How Often Should You Wash Your Dog? A Vet-Backed Guide by Breed
There is no universal answer to how often dogs should be bathed. It depends on coat type, lifestyle, skin condition, and breed-specific needs.
By Coat Type
Short, smooth coats (Beagle, Boxer, Dalmatian): Every 6โ8 weeks. Over-bathing removes the skin's natural oil barrier, leading to dryness and dandruff.
Double coats (Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd): Every 4โ6 weeks. The dense undercoat traps dirt. Important: the undercoat must dry completely โ inadequate drying leads to coat funk.
Long, silky coats (Cocker Spaniel, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier): Every 3โ4 weeks. Always brush fully before bathing โ wet matted fur tightens dramatically.
Curly/wavy coats (Poodle, Doodle, Bichon Frise): Every 3โ4 weeks. Curly coats pick up debris and don't shed โ whatever gets in stays there.
Wire/rough coats (Schnauzer, Airedale): Every 6โ8 weeks. Wire coats have natural dirt-resistant properties.
Skin Conditions Change Everything
Dogs with allergies or seborrhea may need bathing every 1โ2 weeks with medicated shampoo. Dogs with extremely dry skin may need bathing reduced and supplemental omega-3s in their diet.
Signs You're Bathing Too Often
Dull coat, excessive scratching without a known allergen, dandruff, or dry flaky skin can all indicate over-bathing.
Signs You're Not Bathing Often Enough
Persistent odor after brushing, visible greasiness, skin redness, or your dog scratching against furniture suggest the bath is overdue. The sniff test is your most reliable guide.
