How to Litter Train a Kitten

The instinct to bury waste is innate in cats. Litter training is almost entirely about correct setup, not teaching. Use an uncovered box with low sides, unscented clumping litter at 2-3 inches depth, placed in a quiet spot away from food. On arrival, carry your kitten to the box and let them sniff it. After each meal and nap for the first 3-5 days, place them in the box. Scoop daily — cats avoid dirty boxes. When accidents happen near the box, the box setup is wrong. When accidents happen in a consistent alternate spot, place a second box there and move it gradually. When accidents are random, see a vet — UTI and parasites present this way. Never punish; redirect to the box calmly. Litter training failures are almost always environment or health issues, not stubbornness.
