8 Signs Your Dog Is Bored (And Exactly What to Do About It)
Most behavioral problems in dogs that owners attribute to bad temperament are actually boredom. Dogs are cognitively complex animals that were bred to perform demanding tasks all day. The modern pet dog often has none of those outlets.
The 8 Signs
1. Destructive chewing. Chewing that targets furniture, shoes, or baseboards โ not appropriate chew toys โ is almost always a boredom behavior.
2. Excessive barking. A bored dog barks at everything because stimulation, even auditory stimulation, is better than none.
3. Zoomies at predictable times. Sudden bursts of frantic running, especially in the evening, indicate that a dog's needs haven't been met during the day.
4. Pacing or restlessness. A dog that can't settle and moves between rooms repeatedly is communicating unmet needs.
5. Attention-seeking behavior. Pawing, jumping, dropping toys in your lap, or vocalizing to get your attention are all boredom signals.
6. Over-excitement at the leash. A dog that goes completely wild when they see the leash has learned the walk is the highlight of their day because it's their only real enrichment.
7. Digging. Digging provides both physical activity and sensory stimulation. Dogs that dig compulsively are almost always under-enriched.
8. Following you constantly. Constant shadowing combined with other signs usually indicates anxiety driven by under-stimulation.
What to Do
Mental enrichment โ puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, nose work โ is often more tiring than physical exercise alone. Swap the food bowl for a puzzle feeder at every meal. Add one enrichment activity per day. Training sessions of 5โ10 minutes twice daily also address boredom directly.
